Nevada Department of Education Provides Schools & Districts with Access to Critical Behavioral Threat Assessment Training Funded through U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance STOP School Violence Grant

Nevada schools and districts are invited to participate in this grant project focused on supporting the development of multidisciplinary teams to create safe and respectful learning environments. This can be accomplished, in part, by implementing evidence-based training to build, strengthen and maintain knowledge and skills in behavioral threat assessment and suicide prevention.

 

What Does Your School/District Have Access to at No Cost Through the Grant?

Nevada schools and districts will receive a bundle of products and services provided by Navigate360 to support the training and development of behavioral threat assessment teams throughout the life of the grant. Following training and access to Behavioral Case Manager, WestEd’s Justice and Prevention Research Center will provide ongoing implementation and technical assistance.

 

What is Behavioral Threat Assessment?

Behavioral threat assessment is a valuable approach to identifying and mitigating potential threats in schools. The National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) methodology is a widely recognized and effective framework for conducting such assessments. NTAC assessments involve a multidisciplinary team that examines a range of factors, including a student's behavior, communications and access to weapons, to determine the level of risk they may pose. The goal is not to punish or stigmatize students but rather to intervene early and provide appropriate support and resources to help them before any violence occurs. This approach has proven to be effective in preventing incidents of school violence and promoting a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.

Navigate360 Behavioral Case Manager is a powerful tool that can help school and district leaders in Nevada conduct effective threat assessments and intervene early to prevent violence. This platform streamlines the process of collecting and analyzing information about students who may pose a threat, enabling schools to quickly identify and address potential risks. Behavioral Case Manager provides centralized data that helps school administrators collaborate with law enforcement, mental health professionals and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive intervention plan for at-risk students. By utilizing this platform, school leaders in Nevada can proactively manage potential threats and create a safe and respectful learning environment for their students and staff.

How Do I Get Access for My District?

Nav360-K12-Q3-2023-Nevada STOP Grant Process

  1. Download, complete and submit acknowledgment form with your requested session date to NDE at psanborn@doe.nv.gov.
  2. Once approved by NDE, Navigate360 will contact you to obtain a completed roster of users.
  3. Once the roster is submitted, Navigate360 will provide confirmation that your preferred session is secured.
  4. Navigate360 will send the course invitation, login credentials and course information to users specified on the roster on the launch date.
  5. Navigate360 will send reports to the main contact at the school/district and grant them access to view reporting in the portal to ensure users complete required eLearning before the NTAC Level 2 workshop.
  6. Two days before the Level 2 workshop, users will receive the workshop details, course resources and the Zoom link for the virtual session.
  7. Once all users have completed the NTAC eLearning, Level 2 workshop and Suicide Awareness & Prevention eLearning, the school/district will begin the implementation process of Navigate360 Behavioral Case Manager and Preparation & Response Training.

Yes, School Administrators, Deans, School Social Workers, and Teachers can obtain CEUs for participating in NDEs STOP School Violence Threat Assessment Training.

Here are the steps you can take to receive your credit.

  1. Complete Level I Asynchronous Training and post-test
  2. Complete Level II synchronous training and post-test
  3. Submit Training Certificates of Completion to Pat Sanborn at psanborn@doe.nv.gov.
  4. NDE Staff will complete a “Certificate of Professional Development” with the necessary information (participant name, name of professional development activity, date range and hours) and return it to the participant.
  5. Participants can then upload the certificate to their OPAL account to claim their continuing education credits for licensure renewal.

SafeVoice is Nevada’s anonymous tip reporting software, which is provided by Navigate360’s P3Campus Anonymous Reporting & Tipline. This allows any school/district who receives an anonymous tip through SafeVoice to easily escalate the tip to Navigate360’s Behavioral Threat Assessment & Suicide Case Manager with one click, including all of the information provided with the tip and comments by the escalating party, for seamless connection between your violence prevention and threat assessment workflows.

The value of this offer is $2.38/student; however, it comes at no cost to your school/district over the life of the grant, which ends on June 30th, 2026.

By participating in the grant, the school/district agrees to complete all offered trainings – NTAC Level 1, NTAC Level 2 and Suicide Awareness & Prevention. Following training completion, the school/district agrees, as required by the grant, to use the Behavioral Threat Assessment & Suicide Case Manager software to document all threat assessments conducted. Schools/Districts are also required to share case data, excluding personal identifiable information, at the end of each progress report/semester at minimum.

The NTAC Level 1 eLearning training will take approximately 4-6 hours to complete. This is a prerequisite for attending the 4-hour NTAC Level 2 live-virtual workshop. The Suicide Awareness & Prevention eLearning training will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete.

We encourage all behavioral threat assessment team members to participate in the NTAC training provided through the BJA Grant. If participants wish to participate in the Level 2 workshop, they will be required to retake the NTAC Level 1 course prior to their scheduled Level 2 workshop date. Only participants completing NTAC Level 1 through this grant will be eligible to attend a Level 2 workshop.

Schools/Districts will be eligible to gain access to the Case Manager software and additional curriculum offerings provided through the grant upon 100% participant completion in Level 1, Level 2, and Suicide Awareness and Prevention training.

NDE was awarded funding to provide schools/districts with Behavioral Threat Assessment training and Behavioral Threat Assessment & Suicide Case Manager software through June 30th, 2026. Should NDE not receive additional funding at the end of the grant, any Nevada schools/districts would have the opportunity to continue the program with full continuity by subscribing to the service from Navigate360.
