Reports of challenging student behavior have significantly increased this school year. The causes for these challenging behaviors can range from the impacts of COVID-19 – isolation, depression, anxiety, and aggression – to bullying, cyberbullying, substance abuse, and the lack of self-management and coping skills.
For students, consequences of these behaviors often include discipline such as detention, suspension, expulsion, and in some cases, legal action. This can ultimately lead to a variety of negative outcomes for students: stigmatization, learning loss and exposure to the criminal justice system.
There is another option. You can turn students' challenging behavior into learning opportunities through behavioral intervention and restorative practices.
Watch as Dr. Crystal Ladwig and Jeremy Tompkins discuss how districts can address this rise in challenging behaviors by providing students with individualized lessons based on their behaviors and needs, offering a better alternative to detention and suspension and improving decision-making moving forward.
