# Beyond the Bully:

## *What Research Reveals & How to Break the Cycle*

1 in 5 students are bullied every year—but only about 44% ever tell a trusted adult. The rest plays out in the classroom, the hallway, the cafeteria, and online, where no one is watching. And too often, it isn't taken seriously until something serious happens.

But the consequences don’t wait.

When a bullied student is left without the right social skills, some don't stay targets—they become the next aggressor. The cycle repeats itself.

Watch this on-demand session with nationally recognized expert Dr. Eric Landers,  grounded in research that will change the way you think about bullying prevention. He'll discuss how there isn't always a “wrong kid”—and instead of chasing the aggressor, you’ll learn how to equip the student in the crosshairs with five skills that stay with them long after this year's protective teacher is gone.

Somewhere in your building, a student is already being targeted. The only question is whether they'll face it with skills of their own—or just endure it for years to come.

Why this matters

## The same student can be the target, the aggressor, and the bystander.

Schools are built to respond to the student doing the harm—identify, document, discipline. But that misses what the research keeps showing: the roles blur. In the U.S. Secret Service's study of 41 targeted school attacks, nearly all of the attackers who had bullied others had first been bullied themselves. A targeted student left without skills doesn't always stay a target—some find someone more vulnerable, and it starts again.

What we cover:

- **Who gets targeted, and why**: the patterns behind who bullies go after—and what the research shows. Students who are withdrawn, anxious, or seen as “different” are singled out first, and 32.7% are targeted over appearance alone.
- **Why most bullying goes unseen and unreported**: where it really happens, and why targeted students stay silent, and how the right tools stop the cycle.
- **The five skills that reach every role**: emotion regulation, assertiveness, friendship-building, problem solving, and conflict resolution—and why they work for the target, the aggressor, and the bystander alike—with curriculum that sticks.
- **Why low-level concerns can’t wait**: 80% of attackers presented concerning behavior before they acted, and only 17% of schools caught it. See how you can turn a first signal into coordinated action—connecting the right support to the right student before a concern becomes something more serious.

What You'll Learn

## Walk away ready to act.

### The five skills that break the cycle.

Emotion regulation, assertiveness, friendship-building, problem solving, and conflict resolution—the same skills that reach the student bullying, the one being targeted, and the bystander who doesn't know what to do.

### Eyes on the minutes adults miss.

Real-time visibility into how students move through the building, so repeating patterns surface and the wrong two students aren't in the same space before it escalates.

### Why the smallest concerns come first.

How to document low-level incidents for every student involved and connect them across staff, so one coordinated record keeps anyone from slipping through the cracks.

### A system that keeps prevention consistent.

How Navigate360 brings technology, curriculum, and documentation together so prevention and intervention run consistently across your building—turning recognition into action, not a one-time lesson.

Bullying doesn't always end at graduation—research shows it can follow a student into adulthood. Learning the right skills can change that.

"The right support helps students who feel 'helpless and afraid' become 'calmer and more confident' in their social interactions with others."

Dr. Eric Landers

Give your students the skills that will last and your districts the tools to support them.
